Danny Venlet - PUBLIC SPACES

THE LEXINGTON (2006, GPO, Melbourne, Australia)

THE LEXINGTONTHE LEXINGTON. Bar. Since its restauration in late 2004, the historic and heritage-listed Melbourne General Post Office (GPO) in the Bourke St Mall has become a fashion, food and shopping mecca. Its sophisticated image was further enhanced with the opening of two major entertainment venues designed by Danny Venlet – the Lexington and The Music Room. In doing this, Venlet fully exploited the stunning historical architecture of the building - grand in scale and rich in style- to which he added some contemporary elements, creating an engulfing sensual space, and a venue that screams sophistication and elegance. The grand archways, seven metre high ceilings and huge period windows of the Lexington bar – hailed as ‘the city’s new ‘hotspot'- were highlighted by draped private enclaves, art-deco furniture, enormous Swarowski crystal chandeliers that were especially designed for this project, and Venlet’s own d2v2 lights that hover over the gigantic bar, sculpted out of wood and fibreglass. www.thelexington.com.au/lexington
